Due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, new rumors about Marvel’s Thunderbolts are running rampant. With the film still far away from production, many fans have been left wondering whether Marvel has canceled or delayed the film. Here’s all you need to know.
Has MCU’s Thunderbolts been canceled by Marvel?
No, Marvel has not canceled MCU’s Thunderbolts movie.
This rumor originated from EmpireCity Box Office’s tweet which stated that Marvel is not moving forward with Thunderbolts anymore. The handle is known for its box office coverage. But it hasn’t had any reliable scoops in the past and doesn’t have any major sources either.
Furthermore, credible industry insider DanielRPK, aka Daniel Richtman, replied to the tweet stating that it’s “Not true.”
Therefore, it’s unlikely that the Thunderbolts has been canceled. However, there is a possibility for the film to be delayed once the actors’ strike is over.
Is Thunderbolts delayed?
UPDATE: Marvel Studios has delayed Thunderbolts from December 20, 2024, to July 25, 2025.
Thunderbolts hasn’t been delayed yet, but it is likely to be pushed back due to the writers’ and actors’ strikes delaying its development.
Before WGA went on strike, the Thunderbolts movie was reportedly going through script rewrites. The process was paused due to the strike, and then the actors’ strike didn’t allow its production to begin either. So, it will be extremely tough for Marvel to make its current release date of December 20, 2024. DanielRPK also suggested that Thunderbolts will definitely be pushed back:
The film features an ensemble cast, and some actors could have been booked for the dates in late 2023 or in 2024, when Thunderbolts would now begin its production. For instance, Red Guardian actor David Harbour could face scheduling conflicts due to his role in Stranger Things Season 5. So, to accommodate all that, get the script right, and allot enough time to Thunderbolts’ production and post-production, Marvel might push it to 2025.
