The plot revolves around the members of the Dutton family, which has owned the Yellowstone ranch, the largest ranch in the United States situated in the Paradise Valley in Park County, Montana, for seven generations. The initial plan reportedly was to release season 5 part 2, comprising the remaining six of the 14 episodes, a year after the release of part 1, in November 2023. However, multiple factors seem to have contributed to the fact it’s already late October 2023, and the part 2 release date hasn’t been officially announced yet.
As Yellowstone Season 5 Part 1 ended on a cliffhanger, fans are eagerly waiting for the next chapter of the series. In May 2023, though it was announced that season 5 would also be the final season of the series, the Yellowstone Universe would continue in the several spin-offs that the original series has spawned and an untitled sequel series. In September 2023, Kevin Costner, who portrays Dutton family patriarch John Dutton III, gave a hint during his divorce proceeding of what was happening behind the scenes.
According to Fox News, Costner said that it was “complicated” when the lawyer for his estranged wife asked him if he was offered season 6. “We did negotiate,” the Oscar-winning actor elaborated. “There were issues about creative. I tried to break the log jam. They walked away,” he added.
Costner continued, “Somewhere along the line they wanted to change things. They wanted to do 5A and 5B… [affecting] Horizon [an upcoming film co-written, directed, and produced by and starring Costner]. I was going to do my movie Horizon and leave that show, do my movie, then do B. A show I was only doing once a year I was now doing twice.”
It was also reported that Costner had announced that he would go to court over his departure from the series. Moreover, the Hollywood strikes have impacted the production, which was supposed to begin in the summer, and with the SAG-AFTRA strike still ongoing, it might be a while before it starts. Considering all this, it can be optimistically speculated that Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2 will come out sometime in 2024.
