The movie, which was released in 2014, follows the story of Manolo, a young man, torn between following his heart or meeting his family’s expectations. The Book of Life 2 has an interesting journey from excitement to disappointment. Most recently director Jorge R. Gutierrez shared a disappointing update on Twitter about the potential sequel. Replying to a fan who’d asked about the same, he said, “I might get to do this film one day but not anytime soon unless you know something I don’t know.”
Interestingly, he also mentioned that the story is in his head, but he refused to write it down “when the Fox sale to Disney happened.” Here, he is referring to the $71.3 billion merger between Walt Disney Co. and 21st Century Fox. While the exact reasons are unknown, it looks like Gutierrez’s reason for not making the sequel was definitely impacted by the merger.
In 2017, Variety reported that The Book of Life sequel was in the works. Gutierrez even confirmed that the sequel would be a continuation of the existing story “with everybody you love from the first movie.” However, in 2019, he expressed no plans of making the second film anytime soon.
He said, “I get asked about ‘Book of Life 2’ a lot. Especially with Disney now owning ‘Book of Life’ with the Fox sale. Here’s the latest update: for the time being, I currently have no plans [for] it. I genuinely love the first one and adore the characters. But I can die happy with no ‘part 2.'” As disappointing as this sounds, either the director has no plans of making the sequel or has kept all plans under wraps for now. If he ends up collaborating with Disney someday, fans have hope.
