Although it has been nearly 20 years since Will Ferrell and Jon Favreau’s Elf screened in theaters, fans are curious to know if the modern classic and one of the greatest Christmas films of all time will ever get a sequel.
Here’s all the Elf 2 release date information we know so far and all the details on when it is coming out.
Is there an Elf 2 release date?
Elf 2 does not have a release date, as it is highly unlikely to happen.
The reason Elf 2 will never happen is that during the making of the first Elf film all the way back in 2002, the star of the film Will Ferrell, and director Jon Favreau did not get along very well. This was confirmed by the now-deceased James Caan, who played Walter Hobbs in the film, the father of Ferrell’s character Buddy Hobbs. He said as much in an interview with Cleveland’s 92.3 The Fan’s Bull & Fox, where he revealed that he and his co-stars Mary Steenburgen and Zooey Deschanel were up for doing a sequel:
“We were gonna do it, and I thought, ‘Oh my god, I finally got a franchise movie, I could make some money, let my kids do what the hell they want to do, But the director and Will didn’t get along very well,”
He also mentioned that Will Ferrell, like them, was also open to doing Elf 2 and that he was contracted to do so but did not want Jon Favreau to return as the director.
Elf’s cast includes Will Ferrell, James Caan, Mary Steenburgen, Zooey Deschanel, Bob Newhart, Ed Asner, Daniel Tay, Faizon Love, and Peter Dinklage.
