With the Paramount Plus Frasier revival getting closer to its release date, fans wonder whether the beloved character Niles and the actor portraying him, David Hyde Pierce, are in the upcoming series. Is Niles in the Frasier reboot? If not, why did David Hyde Pierce turn down the offer to reprise Niles in the Frasier revival? Here’s what you need to know.
Is Niles in the Frasier reboot?
Niles won’t be in the Frasier reboot.
Unfortunately for the Frasier fans, the younger brother of the titular character, Frasier Crane (Kelsey Grammer), isn’t part of the Paramount Plus revival. Niles is beloved for his witty humor and the contrast he provides to his more self-assured brother. Pierce portrayed the character in the American television sitcom that originally aired on NBC from 1993 to 2004. The actor received numerous accolades and awards for his efforts, including four Emmys for Outstanding Supporting Actor.
In the Paramount Plus show, Niles’ absence will be justified by Frasier’s return to Boston, where he’ll revisit unrealized dreams and reconnect with his fully-grown son, Freddy.
Why David Hyde Pierce isn’t in the Frasier revival?
David Hyde Pierce doesn’t want to reprise the character of Niles.
Reflecting on his character, Pierce confessed he didn’t feel a strong need to revisit Niles due to his immense respect for the original show and its characters. Regarding the Paramount Plus project, he acknowledged the potential for new stories.
While Pierce drew parallels to how Frasier emerged from Cheers without needing the entire original cast, he also left the door open for a cameo. Niles fans might hope to see the character again, should the right occasion arise.
The Frasier revival will stream on Paramount Plus starting October 12.
