Following the Secret Invasion finale’s big reveal, many fans are wondering how long Rhodey has been a Skrull. The initial belief was that Rhodey’s exchange happened sometime after Avengers: Endgame and before The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, since Gravik probably began to turn against humanity after the blip, but the reality might be even more shocking for the fans.
Secret Invasion Hints that Rhodey has been a Skrull since Captain America: Civil War
Towards the end of the series finale, we saw Rhodey in a hospital gown. Many eagle-eyed fans noticed that it was the same gown that he wore after his body was paralyzed during the Airport battle in Captain America: Civil War.
Upon being rescued, he couldn’t walk on his own because he didn’t have his leg braces. It’s likely that he never got to try those supporting braces because he was swapped from the hospital where he was admitted to be tested and treated in 2016. Hence, the real Rhodey has been in Skrull captivity for the last nine or 10 years, depending upon when Secret Invasion takes place (either in 2025 or 2026).
The significance of Rhodey being a Skrull
Since Rhodey was replaced by the Oscar-worthy Skrull Rava almost a decade ago, it proves that the Skrulls had been planning their invasion before The Snap occurred. This also points a finger at Fury’s competency because he missed out on yet another mutiny after Hydra’s infiltration of S.H.I.E.L.D., which also happened on his watch.
Furthermore, since Rhodey has been a Skrull for so long, he doesn’t know about Thanos or the blip. He wasn’t the one who fought alongside the Avengers in Infinity War and Endgame. He doesn’t even know that his best friend Tony Stark died saving the Universe. Now, he has got even more catching up to do than The Snap victims.
How Secret Invasion sets up Armor Wars
Secret Invasion set up Rhodey’s upcoming solo outing perfectly because Rava possibly led Stark Tech to fall into the wrong hands. So now, Rhodey won’t just be catching up on the changes that happened in his absence, but he will also have to handle the ramifications of what Rava did using his body, and prevent the misusage of Stark tech in Armor Wars.
