Despite season 8’s salty ending, the demand for Game of Thrones Season 9 was still high. As a result, we got a prequel spinoff with House of the Dragon. But is there a release date for Game of Thrones season 9 as well? When is it coming out and which streaming service will pick it up?
Here’s all the Game of Thrones Season 9 release date information we know so far, and all the details on when it is coming out.
Is there a Game of Thrones Season 9 release date?
No, there are no plans for Game of Thrones Season 9 after Season 8 aired in April-May 2019.
The story that David Benioff and D.B. Weiss wanted to tell ended with Game of Thrones season 8. There was never supposed to be a season 9 as George R.R. Martin has not completed his next two novels in the series.
Instead, HBO began to develop prequels and spinoffs. House of the Dragon was the first of those and it was received very well. Now, House of the Dragon is currently under production and it is expected to release in mid-2024, similar to the first season’s August 2022 release window.
There are several other Game of Thrones spinoffs under development including the ones based on Corlys Velaryon from House of the Dragon and Jon Snow from the original series. George R. R. Martin mentioned that some of these spinoffs are moving forward very quickly while others have been shelved.
The second spinoff officially announced in April 2023 is called A Knight of The Seven Kingdom: The Hedge Knight. Based on George R.R. Martin’s Dunk and Egg books, it features Ser Duncan the Tall and a young Aegon V as “Dunk” and “Egg.” The events of this series will take place between Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon.
ComingSoon will provide an update to this story once we receive official details.
Is Game of Thrones Season 9 coming out soon?
No, Game of Thrones Season 9 will not be releasing on HBO, and Max.
Instead, we will be getting House of the Dragon Season 2 in mid-2024, and A Knight of The Seven Kingdom: The Hedge Knight could land a 2025/2026 release date on Max.
However, a Jon Snow spinoff series could act as a “wannabe Game of Thrones season 9” once it gets the official greenlight.
