The Flash Season 9: Who is Cobalt Blue the DC Villain?

The ninth and last season of The Flash will see the titular hero taking on his final antagonist, the dangerous DC villain Cobalt Blue. The villain hasn’t appeared yet, but he’ll likely be part of the multi-episode “A New World” storyline that will conclude The CW fan-favorite series.

Who is Cobalt Blue in DC Comics?

In the comics, Cobalt Blue is one of the many memorable DC villains who clash with Barry Allen. His real name is Malcolm Thawne, Barry’s twin brother raised as a con artist after the brothers were separated at birth. Malcolm suffers from a condition that causes his skin to turn blue when exposed to sunlight. While searching for his true identity, Malcolm discovered a mystical talisman known as Blue Flame that gave him powers. He then took on the identity of Cobalt Blue for himself, using his powers to express his deep-seated resentment toward his long-lost twin brother. Created by Mark Waid and Brian Augustyn, Cobalt Blue first appeared in November 1997’s Speed Force #1.

Is Eddie Thawne Cobalt Blue?

Unlike in the comics, Eddie Thawne is Cobalt Blue in the live-action series after The Flash producers changed the character’s backstory. Season 9 will feature original cast member Rick Cosnett reprising his role as Central City Police Department detective Eddie for one last ride. On top of that, several photos from the show’s production unveiled The Flash will take on a squad of old villains, including Godspeed, Reverse Flash, and Savitar, besides Cobalt Blue.

Eddie debuted in Season 1, where he discovered he was the ancestor of Eobard Thawne, a.k.a. the Reverse-Flash. In an attempt to erase Eobard from existence, Eddie sacrifices himself in the freshman season. The story mentions the character several times throughout the series, with Cosnett returning in different forms in Seasons 2, 3, and 8.
