Grotesquerie’s ending is tough to explain. Many viewers were under the impression it was a limited series and were confused by the cliffhanger finale. The first season ended with barely any explanation of what was going on with Lois or why the Grotesquerie murders were happening just as she remembered them from her coma. We’ll do our best to connect the pieces and theorize on what might come below.
What happens in the Grotesquerie season finale?
Episode 9 of Grotesquerie ended with Lois executing Megan’s abusive boyfriend Justin. However, when the final episode begins, she’s driving in a haze and finally returns home to find Marshall and Redd asking her to live as a trio. Lois refuses, and Redd reveals in a later car ride with Marshall that she knows he’s been sleeping around with other women and no longer wants to be with him.
When Marshall returns to teach his class, things get worse for him when Megan and Gale arrive and arrest him due to sexual assault allegations from one of his students. He argues that the relationship was consensual, but he’s booked anyway before being released on his own recognisance.
Knowing that his career, marriage, and relationships are over, Marshall attempts to commit suicide. He fails, and Redd and Merritt visit to tell him some hard truths. After Marshall leaves the hospital, he’s contacted by Ed, who invites him to join a men’s group. The group, which is comprised of almost every man in Lois’s life (including her therapists), wants to return to “traditional” values, and Marshall is warmly embraced when he agrees with the group’s goal.
Meanwhile, Lois has a nervous breakdown and begins believing she’s dead or still in a coma. She’s committed and admits to Dr. Whitcomb that she killed Justin but that all evidence of his death is gone and that Megan denies the incident occurred. Lois also states that she believes Charlie was having orgies in her room while she was in a coma and that she overheard him discussing he impregnated a patient. She also tells him that the first Grotesquerie murder has occurred exactly like it did in her dreams and that someone who has access to her files must have done it.
However, Dr. Witticomb flips the script on Lois and states he thinks that she has Cotard’s Syndrome and that she might be the one who’s responsible for the violence and negativity in her life, suggesting that she’s the killer. Insulted, she ends the interview and returns to her room.
After a few days, Megan visits Lois in the middle of the night and asks for her help. She brings Lois to the scene of the second Grotesquerie killing. She reveals that Lois really did kill Justin and that it wasn’t all in her head before leading her in to see the crime scene.
The murders are just as they were in Lois’s dreams, but the victims aren’t the same. This time, it’s Charlie who’s been crucified, and Mary Colsby, the girl who reported that Marshall sexually assaulted her, is among the dead.
Lois takes charge of the scene and tells everyone to meet her at her old office in an hour. She explains that she knows exactly who the killer is, and the episode ends.
Unfortunately, we may never know the story’s conclusion. Grotesquerie hasn’t been officially renewed for a second season, and there are too few clues for us to piece together the rest of the story by ourselves. Speaking with Deadline, Niecy Nash stated that she doesn’t know how the series is supposed to end and that she’s waiting to see what happens alongside fans.
