Fans are looking for a Kayla DiCello injury update after her withdrawal from the 2024 US Olympic Trials for the Paris Olympic Games. In the opening competition for women’s gymnastics during the meet, the 20-year-old DiCello sustained an injury. It was unclear how severe the injury was at the time, but USA Gymnastics has since confirmed on X that she is “unable to continue the competition tonight after sustaining an injury on vault.” Here’s what we know so far about what happened to Kayla DiCello during the Olympic Trials.
How did Kayla DiCello get injured at the 2024 US Olympic Trials?
Kayla DiCello got injured on a vault attempting what looks to be a Yurchenko double full.
While the tweet from US Gymnastics says that’s she out of the competition on Day 1, announcer Terry Gannon on the NBC live broadcast of the event stated that she was out of the meet entirely and will not be going to the Olympics.
Looking at a replay of her vault attempt, she was able to perform the cartwheel onto the table but was unable to twist her body in the air. After flipping once, she then landed on the mat and calmly let herself fall. She shook her head a few times and let the medical team take her to a wheelchair.
It’s unclear at this time what type of injury DiCello sustained or if she was fighting an injury before the vault attempt. The gymnast was seen wearing a brace on her right lower leg during podium training on June 26, as noted in a TikTok post by 2020 Olympic Gold Medalist Sunisa Lee, who is also trying to make the Olympic team this year during the Trials.
Kayla Dicello was the third-place finisher during the 2024 US Gymnastics Championships in early June, so she had a good shot at making the five-member Olympic team for women’s gymnastics. Unfortunately, the Trials has been very unlucky for several competitors so far, with Skye Blakely also bowing out of the competition after sustaining an injury during podium training.
