House of the Dragon: Who Are The Largest and Second Largest Dragons?

The largest dragon in House of the Dragon is an important matter, since the biggest fire-breathing beast is also usually the strongest. In the civil war between the Greens (the Hightowers) and the Blacks (Princess Rhaenyra), having the largest dragon is not only a symbol of their military power, but would give one side the greatest trump card on the board. The Max series mentions who the largest dragon is a few times, though viewers might be wondering who the second largest dragon might be too. The war is finally coming to a head in season two, and it’s time to rally forces.

Who are the largest, biggest dragons in House of the Dragon?

The largest dragon in House of the Dragon is Vhagar, who belongs to Aemond Targaryen, and it’s no contest. The second largest, though, is Vermithor, who might appear again in Season 2 if all goes to plan.

During the Dance of Dragons civil war, Vhagar is so impressive that she is twice the size of Caraxes, the dragon of Daemon Targaryen. Also known as the Queen of All Dragons, she was once ridden by Visenya Targaryen, a legendary figure that lived during Aegon’s Conquest of Westeros and one that even Arya Stark looks up to. So despite the fact that the Blacks have more dragons and dragon riders on their side, Vhagar alone can counter all of them easily in a one-on-one fight. That’s why Aegon and Aemond Targaryen are confident that they could defeat anyone in battle with Vhagar (or just invoking her name as a threat).

The title of top dragon used to be held by her brother Balerion, but he died before the beginning of the series. His great skull is shown in the background in season one when King Viserys speaks to Rhaenyra about the Song of Ice and Fire.

That said, the Blacks understand they need to counter Vhagar, if at all possible. In season one, Daemon Targaryen attempts to tame Vermithor, the dragon of King Jaehaerys, who has since been rider-less but is the second largest and oldest dragon in Westeros. Though Daemon sings a song to put the the dragon at ease, he still meets a blast of fire that goes above his head. Still, they end the scene staring at each other, possibly alluding to Vermithor becoming a part of the Blacks’ forces in season two.
