At E3 this weekend, Microsoft announced the popular Blair Witch franchise will return to video games. While the film helped revolutionize the “found footage” horror subgenre, Microsoft is hoping to do the same for video games. You can check out the trailer in the player below!
The game, titled simply Blair Witch, takes place in 1996 — three years before the 1999 film. It starts when a young boy disappears in the Black Hills Forest near Burkittsville, Maryland. As Ellis, a former police officer with a troubled past, you join the search. What starts as an ordinary investigation soon turns into an endless nightmare as you confront your fears and the Blair Witch, a mysterious force that haunts the woods.

The Blair Witch franchise started with 1999’s The Blair Witch Project, which chronicled three aspiring documentarians as they got lost in the woods and evil forces kept creeping in. The following year, Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2, which was a more conventional film that took a meta look at its predecessor. Then, in 2016, the horror film The Woods was revealed to be another sequel in the franchise, also titled Blair Witch.
From the creative minds behind the critically acclaimed Layers of Fear, your darkest fears will awaken on August 30.
