THQ and World Events Productions announced today that video games based on the classic “Voltron” television franchise are coming:
Voltron is returning to defend the universe, and the iconic brand is ready to thrill longtime fans and gain new audiences under an agreement announced today between World Events Productions (WEP) and THQ Inc.
WEP, a top animated television production company, and its representative, Classic Media a global media company with a portfolio of some of the world’s leading entertainment brands will work with THQ to produce video games based on the Voltron franchise.
The video games from THQ, a leading worldwide developer and publisher of interactive entertainment software, will join a previously announced toy line produced under a separate agreement between WEP and Mattel, which plans to release toy lines based on classic Voltron in 2011 and new Voltron Force in 2012.
The Voltron video games from THQ are anticipated to debut this fall, following the premiere of the all-new 2D/CGI animated Voltron Force series, which is set to launch in the U.S. on Nicktoons, and with other key broadcasters worldwide, in 2011.
THQ’s games will build on the epic adventure that blazed onto television screens in 1984 as Voltron: Defender of the Universe, in which five robotic lions, piloted by a team of brave space explorers, combine to form the mighty robot hero, Voltron. The show quickly became a top-rated series that inspired a best-selling toy line and turned Voltron into a pop-culture icon.
“The video games relationship with THQ, along with our master toy relationship with Mattel, signals the exciting future ahead for Voltron,” said Robert Koplar, Vice President at World Events Productions. “With its signature robot lion action and titanic-scale battles, our Voltron games and toys along with our new series are sure to have enormous appeal to fans of all ages around the world.”
