It has been somewhat of a mystery as to what WB Games Montreal is currently working on. Since releasing Gotham Knights back in 2022, which received middling reviews when it launched, they’ve been quiet for over two years. It seems there is a good reason for that. A new report suggests two of their games based on DC characters The Flash and Constantine get scrapped.
The Flash video game was canceled due to Ezra Miller movie’s flop
According to a new report from Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, WB Games Montreal pitched a game based on the Hellblazer John Constantine. While the higher-ups were excited about the new project, it never really made it off the ground floor as the proposed budget and timeline approvals were not ideal for the executives.
First they pitched a game based on the comic book antihero John Constantine, who was played by Keanu Reeves in a 2005 feature film,” said Schreier. “Haddad’s team, led by vice president of production Ben Bell, initially said they were excited about the idea. But when asked for budget and timeline approvals, they remained noncommittal, according to the people familiar with the plans.”
With their initial pitch in the dumps, WB Games’ vice president of production Ben Bell suggested characters The Flash and Joker, both of which would have movies release in 2023 and 2024 respectively. The Montreal studio chose The Flash, but the project was scrapped due to the movie’s performance at the box office.
After months of waffling, Bell suggested that they should work instead on a game starring a more recognizable character, like the Joker or the Flash. They chose to go with the superhero speedster,” said Schreier. “But in 2023, Warner Bros. released Flash, a lavish movie starring Ezra Miller, which bombed at the box office. The video game has since been scrapped.”
WB Games Montreal has since helped with other projects including Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. According to the report, the studio is currently working on a pitch for a video game based on the popular George R.R. Martin franchise Game of Thrones.
