Playground Productions announced it is bringing back the iconic Backyard Sports franchise. Along with the expected video game release, the company plans to expand the franchise into other formats, including television, film, merchandise, and more.
When are the Backyard Sports games coming back?
It seems Backyard Sports fans won’t have to wait long. Playground Productions announced the rerelease is slated to launch “in the coming months.” It is also stated that these rereleases will be revamped in some way while staying true to what made the franchise so popular.
It’s not known which title marks the beginning of this franchise’s comeback. However, the newly released trailer features its cast of characters playing baseball. Additionally, art featuring Pablo Sanchez, Stephanie Morgan, Ernie Steele, Achmed Khan, and Pete Wheeler shows them with a football, basketball, baseball mitt, soccer ball, and hockey stick, representing almost all the sports the series has featured.
“We’re incredibly excited to reintroduce Backyard Sports to a new generation of players,” said Chris Waters, Chief Product Officer at Playground Productions. “We’re taking great care to preserve the look and feel that made the original games so special while updating them with modern features and gameplay that today’s audience expects. I can’t wait for fans to see what we’re building on the Playground.”
“Backyard Sports is more than just a game; it’s a cherished part of childhood for millions of people,” said Lindsay Barnett, Founder and CEO of Playground Productions. “I look at media as the largest classroom in the world. As such, our goal is to produce meaningful content that not only entertains but also educates and inspires. The return of Backyard Sports is the perfect embodiment of that goal.”
Film and television based on the franchise are planned, but details have yet to be revealed. Merchandise is currently available on the store at the official website.
The Backyard Sports games were originally developed by Humongous Entertainment. The series’ first game was Backyard Baseball which was released back in 1997. The developer expanded its list of sports with Backyard Soccer, Football, Basketball, Hockey, and Skateboarding.
