In celebration of Mar10 day at the weekend, three more Mario games will hit Nintendo Switch Online today, March 12. While Dr. Mario was released on Game Boy, the remaining two games — Mario Golf and Mario Tennis — were originally released on Game Boy Color.
All three Mario games are available without an Expansion Pass subscription
All three Mario games can be found in the Game Boy library, therefore they will be available to all Nintendo Switch Online members regardless of whether they have subscribed to the Expansion Pass or not.
Dr. Mario is a falling block tile-matching puzzle game where players have to destroy the viruses in the playing field using the medicines that Dr. Mario throws into play. The 34-year-old game has managed to make an appearance on all of Nintendo’s home consoles now that it is being added to the subscription service.
Mario Golf is the first of two Game Boy Color sporting offerings and is not to be confused with the Nintendo 64 version, which is already available on Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. This version let players level up, gave the characters more freedom to move around and explore, and offered more interaction with other characters that gave it a slightly more detailed storyline. While characters could be transferred from Game Boy Color to Nintendo 64 originally, it’s unlikely this functionality will be available on Nintendo Switch Online.
Finally, Mario Tennis is the youngest game of the three at the mere age of 24. A Nintendo 64 version of this game is also already available on Expansion Pass but this version is slightly different once again. An additional mode puts players at the Royal Tennis Academy where they need to build up their skills and be crowned champion. Only then can they take on the best tennis player, Mario. The character transfer functionality is also likely to be missing from this game too.
