The last few years have seen Microsoft Gaming shift focus from Xbox consoles to prioritize the subscription-based Game Pass service. However, CEO Phil Spencer recently confirmed that Xbox isn’t getting out of the console business.
Phil Spencer says Xbox will keep making consoles
According to journalist Shannon Liao, Spencer discussed the future of Xbox during an employee town hall last week. The Microsoft executive reportedly told staff that the company plans to continue developing and manufacturing new consoles. According to Spencer, consoles will continue to be part of Xbox’s gaming strategy, which will include a variety of devices. Spencer did not return Liao’s request for comment. However, it’s good to have confirmation that Microsoft isn’t giving up on consoles just yet.
Microsoft has been one of the game industry’s big three for decades. However, there have been signs that Xbox leadership might be considering leaving the console market. During the FTC hearing last year, Spencer gave some insight into the company’s long-term strategy. While consoles are an important part of that, Game Pass remains the centerpiece of the company’s plans. Spencer even insinuated that Xbox’s survival may depend on Game Pass meeting its growth targets.
It’s also no secret that Xbox Series X and Series S sales have not kept pace with the PlayStation 5. However, that’s not necessarily a big problem if Microsoft Games’ current strategy works out. Spencer’s talk of multiple devices refers not only to consoles and PC but also to mobile devices via Cloud Gaming. Reports suggest that multiple Xbox games are potentially coming to PlayStation 5. This may include titles like Bethesda’s Starfield and the upcoming Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.
