Mortal Kombat 11 will be one of the main games at 2022’s Evolution Championship Series, the annual fighting game tournament held in Las Vegas that’s also known as Evo. However, users shouldn’t expect other Mortal Kombat news or a Mortal Kombat 12 reveal at the event.

Series Co-Creator Ed Boon took to Twitter to temper expectations. IGN put out a tweet (which has since been deleted) that said the “developers behind Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Tekken and Guilty Gear are all expected to make announcements during Evo 2022,” which will run from August 5 to August 7. Boon then came in debunking the part relevant to his studio before following up that it was “time for Street Fighter and other great fighting games to be in the sun” and that users should “enjoy that.”

The core misinterpretation seems to stem from the inclusion of Warner Bros. Sony, which recently acquired Evo, put out a PlayStation Blog post about the tournament stating that viewers can expect “exciting content and reveals from developers and publishers, such as Arc System Works, Warner Bros. Games, Capcom, SNK, and Bandai Namco Entertainment” at the tournament. While Warner Bros. does publish Mortal Kombat, it also published MultiVersus, the platform fighter that recently went into open beta. That game is much more likely to be part of any potential Warner Bros.-related reveals.
Boon also claimed he knew nothing of what MultiVersus has in store for Evo. Coincidentally, Mortal Kombat‘s Scorpion was one of fighters on the alleged MultiVersus roster leak, a list that was recently at least partially corroborated by the official reveals of Rick, Morty, and LeBron James.

NetherRealm Studios has long since moved on from Mortal Kombat 11, but many were likely hoping for a Mortal Kombat 12 announcement. The studio has been quiet about what it has been working on, but there have been a few pieces of evidence pointing to it developing another entry in the bloody fighting game series.
An odd and quickly scrubbed desk photo from a NetherRealm employee had files on their desktop that seemed to point to Mortal Kombat 12. Andrew Bowen, who voiced Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat X and Mortal Kombat 11, also posted (and, again, quickly deleted) a video of him in front of WB’s water tower with some Mortal Kombat-esque music in the background. Journalist and insider Jeff Grubb also claimed in August 2021 that NetherRealm was working on Mortal Kombat 12 instead of Injustice 3, citing uncertainty with WB as a potential reason.
This has been the longest NetherRealm has gone without revealing a new game, which is why its players may be antsy to see what’s been cooking at the studio. But it seems as though they will have to wait just a bit longer.
