Blizzard Entertainment had delayed Overwatch 2, but that was before it decoupled the PVP mode from the PVE mode. The switch has seemingly allowed the team to release some parts of Overwatch 2 earlier than anticipated, as Blizzard not only announced an October 4 release date for the PVP mode, but also stated that it is going free-to-play. This also came alongside a new hero reveal.

Blizzard unveiled this through a new trailer that had typical Overwatch 2 gameplay, which came before the free-to-play reveal. This footage also debuted the long-anticipated Junker Queen hero, who had been rumored for years, as she is mentioned in other parts of the game, particularly the Junkertown map. She also got her own origin trailer and will be a tank. Blizzard will be revealing more information on June 16 at 10 a.m. PT.
This information did leak beforehand from a new (and incredibly accurate) leaker The Snitch on Twitter. On June 11, they tweeted a vague reference to Overwatch 2 going free-to-play.
