The long-awaited sequel God of War Ragnarök is seemingly still on track for a release this year according to at least one member of the team at Santa Monica Studio.
Art Director Bruno Velazquez responded to a fan posting about the game, saying that “Ragnorok [sic] is coming this year.” This would mean that the game joins a busy year for Sony releases that also include the previously released Horizon: Forbidden West and Gran Turismo 7, among others.

The PlayStation exclusive franchise is one of Sony’s heaviest hitters, but information about the new game has been sparse. Fans got a first look at the game at a PlayStation Showcase back in September. This trailer confirms the return of Midgard as well as a new attack for Kratos featuring his legendary weapons of choice.

It was also confirmed in that timeframe that God of War Ragnarök would be the second in a set of two. This game’s story would wrap up Kratos’ war against Norse Mythology, stopping short of his trilogy of games in the PlayStation 2 era against the Greek gods.

When asked why this is, creative director Cory Barlog explained: “The first game took five years. The second game, I don’t know how long it’s going to take… then if you think, wow, a third one in that same [timeframe], and we’re talking like a span of close to 15 years of a single story. I feel like that’s just too stretched out.” If all goes well, PlayStation owners will be stepping into the boots of the paternal godkiller sometime in the next eight months.
