Monkey Island is one of the most revered adventure games from the 1990s, but its releases are few and far between. The last new entry came out in 2009. However, that dry spell is ending sometime in 2022 with the newly announced Return to Monkey Island. The game is coming out later this year, but platforms were not specified.

Devolver Digital released a teaser trailer of the game, which didn’t show much footage of it in action, only those behind it. Lucasfilm Games will be part of the project along with Terrible Toybox, which is Ron Gilbert’s game studio. Gilbert was responsible for several LucasArts games including the first two Monkey Island titles. It’s also going to be a follow-up to Secret of Monkey Island and Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge, meaning it is possibly forgetting about the later entries Gilbert didn’t work on.
Gilbert said on Twitter that the team had been making it for two years in “complete secrecy.” “Complete secrecy” might be somewhat of a inaccurate label since he also somewhat spilled the beans on April 1, 2022 where he posted a blog revealing that he was making a Monkey Island game. Given the jokey nature of the day, many did not read too heavily into it. It’s also a callback to a September 2013 tweet he made saying that if he were making a Monkey Island game, he’d announce it on April Fools’ Day.

Return to Monkey Island will feature many returning players from the original games. Dominic Armato is reprising his role as Guybrush Threepwood. Gilbert and Dave Grossman are once again writing the game. Michael Land, Peter McConnell, and Clint Bajakian are composing the music.
