Ghostwire: Tokyo Showcase Reveals More Magical Shooting Gameplay

Ghostwire: Tokyo Showcase Breaks Down Its Magical Shooting Gameplay

Ghostwire: Tokyo is one of the upcoming PlayStation 5 and PC games that Tango Gameworks hasn’t shown much of outside of a few clips here and there. The studio has finally given a full breakdown of the shooter, revealing its gameplay systems and a little more about its open world.

Game Director Kenji Kimura introduced the showcase before throwing to a more guided gameplay walkthrough. The main form of combat is called Ethereal Weaving, which lets players channel elements like fire, wind, and water. They all seemed to have different effects, too, as wind looked like it pushed the demonic enemies back while the fire power had a large blast radius. These powers can be upgraded by spending souls, which is an upgrade currency in the game. Players can also block incoming fire and use other tools like a bow and arrow.

And since it is an open world, players can either walk around the haunted streets or grapple to special Tengu in order to get access to the rooftops. These rooftops will contain some of the game’s corrupted torii gates. Clearing those will then remove some of the infected areas throughout this twisted version of Japan. Some other side missions have trippy, otherworldly interpretations of otherwise normal areas and seem to channel Tango’s past work on The Evil Within.

That section of video ended with a release date announcement, which was a little bizarre given that the description of the video that went up on February 2 already stated the March 25 date. Regardless, players can pre-order the game and those who buy it early and digitally on the PlayStation 5 will get early access to the title beginning on March 22. Pre-ordering in general unlocks the Streetwear Outfit Pack, Shinobi Outfit, and Kunai Weapon, which all give the protagonist different costumes or weapons.

The showcase then transitioned to interviews with various members of the team and was led by Tango Founder and Ghostwire: Tokyo Executive Producer Shinji Mikami, who is known his work on seminal titles like Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, Vanquish, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, and many more. The team ran through what their inspirations were, how they view the game, ghosts, and more. ComingSoon will also have a Ghostwire: Toyko preview up tomorrow speaking about footage that wasn’t in the showcase.
