Developer Revealed for Upcoming South Park Video Game

A new South Park video game was quietly announced last year via a report that described it as “a 3D video game that is set in the world of South Park.” While that description was as vague as can be and offered up little in terms of details, we now know the developer that South Park Studios will be collaborating on for its latest video game adaptation.

As a job listing for a lead level designer on its website reveals, the developer for the project is Question. South Park will be the biggest game yet for the studio, which is made up “of ex-AAA developers whose past team credits include: Thief: Deadly Shadows, BioShock, BioShock 2, BioShock InfiniteDishonored, South Park: The Stick of Truth, and South Park: Fractured But Whole.” Seeing how the studio has members that worked on the past two previous South Park role-playing games, it’s clear why South Park Studios decided to partner up with Question.

The job listing and its requirements do give a few hints as to what to expect from the upcoming South Park project. It asks for applicants to have shipped at least one “one multiplayer game as a senior level designer or have equivalent relevant experience,” so the next South Park game could have a multiplayer component. It also notes that the studio runs on Unreal 4, so the next game will likely run on Unreal Engine as well.

Other job responsibilities for the position include include:

  • Own the core process of Level Design review and ideation, creating and refining that tight core loop that anneals fun out of a thousand major and minor adjustments.

  • Create the “showcase” gameplay spaces that show off good process for the rest of the team, resulting in levels choc full of aesthetically compelling moments and interesting tactical choices.

  • Work through the Level Design team to develop level and spatial concepts, starting from pitches, research, and concept-sourcing and culminating in demonstrable whiteboxes and treatments.

  • Iterate over existing spaces with art, design, and engineering in order to hit visual, experiential, and performance targets for the game.

  • Help define pipeline and process for assets with artists and engineers, speaking fluently about tool and process tradeoffs.

  • Play the game often with the team, proactively seek/solve issues, and offer game design feedback on the holistic product.

This would be the third major release for Question, who previously put out the humorous sandbox puzzle game The Magic Circle, which had a meta story about a QA tester for a game in development hell, and The Blackout Club, a first-person co-op horror game.
