Sony hasn’t quite matched Microsoft’s acquisition spree, but it still has been making moves. After formally buying Insomniac Games in August 2019, it also went on the snatch Housemarque, Nixxes, and Bluepoint Games in 2021. And today, Sony is adding to that portfolio with Valkyrie Entertainment.

Head of PlayStation Studios Hermen Hulst announced the move on Twitter. In his short tweet, he stated that the developer will “be making invaluable contributions to key PlayStation Studios franchises.”

His statement refers to the fact that Valkyrie is not known for its original titles as its last game was the poorly received and Sony-published Guns Up!. Instead, it is recognized more as a support studio for other well-known games. The Seattle developer has helped on titles like Halo Infinite, The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners, Valorant, Middle-earth: Shadow of War, Forza Motorsport 7, God of War, and the upcoming of God of War Ragnarök. The team even announced in September that it was helping with the upcoming Sony Santa Monica action game. The studio even says on its website that it “[empowers world-class game developers and publishers] to achieve the full potential of their visions.”

With PlayStation Studios focusing on gigantic titles like God of War, The Last of Us, Horizon, and Spider-Man, it makes sense to bring in a first-party support studio as these premier games take many, many resources. Sony is likely bringing in Valkyrie to meet its goal of making the huge games it is known for. It’s not too unlike the move to bring in Nixxes as the goal there was probably to find a team to help Sony with its push to put more of its first-party games on the PC.
