There are many types of PAX shows — South, West, Unplugged, East, Australia — but there’s about to be one less. PAX South is ending for the “foreseeable future” as the organizers have decided to cut out the expo in San Antonio, Texas.

The official PAX Twitter account tweeted the news. The note described how the PAX team initially wanted to spread the expo to other cities, including San Antonio in 2015. But despite having the highest attendance for its inaugural year, it didn’t grow after that and “remained the same show that it was when [they] opened it in 2015.” Because of stagnation and the Covid-19 pandemic, they have decided to end the show until further notice. They then thanked the fans and those who came out to the Texas-based version of the convention.

Some users in the replies bemoaned the loss as PAX South was easier to get to than the other shows in Boston and Seattle. One reminisced that its lighter crowds meant attendees could actually play the games there, which, given PAX statement’s, seemed to have contributed to its downfall. Another described how it was a great show for smaller devs because of how the other PAX cities are generally more expensive.

PAX South has always been held in January so this gives attendees just about a two-month notice. PAX in general has been suffering because of the pandemic, which can be most easily shown through pictures of the most recent event in September 2021. The previously crowded venue was rather barren due to safety protocols and likely the general hesitancy to travel to an event and gather with a bunch of other people.
