For a publisher that gets criticized for churning through sequels, it has been over eight years since the last Splinter Cell installment. But according to a new report, Ubisoft has just greenlit another Splinter Cell game.
VideoGamesChronicle is behind the report as its development sources have told the publication that a new installment is coming. The report also states that this game is being seen as a way to get some of its fans back. It has become somewhat of a joke over the years, but series protagonist Sam Fisher has shown in multiple other games like Ghost Recon Breakpoint and Rainbow 6 Siege but not his own. This was further exacerbated by his inclusion in the mobile title Elite Squad and the upcoming Splinter Cell VR game.

There is no developer attached to the game in its current. But VGC’s sources indicated that it wouldn’t be Ubisoft Montreal, which led many (but not all) of the prior titles. And since a lot of these details describe a project in its very early stages, it won’t be revealed soon. However, VGC notes that there is a “small chance” it could be announced in 2022.
Players have be clamoring for a new Splinter Cell for years and Ubisoft has only hinted at it coming back in the future. CEO Yves Guillemot said during E3 2017 that the company was “not forgetting” about the franchise. Then in a 2019 interview, Guillemot stated that creating a new game means coming with something different and that fan demands made teams “anxious” to work on the series.

“Anxious” in this context seems to have meant “hesitant” as he implied that developers didn’t want to displease fans with their changes, which has happened in past Splinter Cell games. After citing the success of other Ubisoft series like Assassin’s Creed pulling away talent from a possible Splinter Cell game, he did say that we would “see something” at some point.
