It’s been a while since Sony has had a big official showcase for the PlayStation 5. The company has held a few State of Plays, but those tend to be smaller updates for both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. However, Sony has announced that it is holding a PlayStation Showcase on September 9 at 1 p.m. PT to show “what’s next for PlayStation 5.”
Sony announced this event on its blog and further emphasized that this is a larger event that likely won’t be filled with updates for indie games or ports. It will be around 40 minutes of updates from PlayStation Studios and other studios about games that are coming out this year and beyond. Some of the teams featured in the showcase will also go on the PlayStation Blog after and divulge more details. But don’t expect any PSVR2 news, as Sony was quick to point out.

Given the implied spectacle of the event, it seems like it has the prestige of a E3-like showcase. Although the larger scale is almost a given, it’s still not clear what will be shown. Naughty Dog has been quietly making its standalone multiplayer game, which might be ready for the stage. There have also been solid reports of a remake coming for the first The Last of Us. There have even been some rumors about an Uncharted PS5 collection, but those seem shaky at best.
Sony has a whole stable of studios that could be showing games. Housemarque might have some more Returnal content to show. Sucker Punch, while just finishing with Ghost of Tsushima‘s first expansion, could be there in some fashion. And while there was a 14-minutes gameplay demo of Horizon Forbidden West in May, Guerrilla could also show up.

Team Asobi might have some quick Astro Bot-related teaser. Insomniac Games has already released two PS5 games and might also have something else in store, especially if the Sunset Overdrive rumors and reemergence have any meaning. Some are probably hoping to see God of War‘s sequel, which seems like it will be the next big exclusive after Horizon. It also wouldn’t be outlandish if Polyphony Digital provided some update on Gran Turismo 7.
With all of these first-party studios and the vast array of third-party partners Sony has secured this generation, the possibilities are nearly endless. But nothing will be concrete until next week when Sony takes the digital stage.
