The Witcher 3’s Next-Gen Update Could Use Fan Mods

Slated for later this year, The Witcher 3‘s next-gen update will make some visual and technical improvements to the critically acclaimed RPG. It seems some of those improvements might have been partially created by the game’s modding community.

In a post from HalkHogan, the creator of “The Witcher 3 HD Reworked Project” mod, stated he got an official message from Polish developer CD Projekt Red and it is likely the mod will be included in the next-gen update.

“I think the most important news is that I got an official message from CDPR about cooperation,” says Hogan. “While it’s not certain yet, it’s likely that HDRP will be included in the official next-generation update.”

Kotaku reached out to CD Projekt Red to confirm Hogan’s statement and said, “In addition to our own development efforts on the upcoming next-gen version of The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC, we are also in talks with creators of various mods for the 2015 release of the game.” The statement continues, “As of this time, however, we do not have any binding agreements with any such party.”

Given the statements from both parties, it seems there have definitely been talks with modders to bring their work to The Witcher 3‘s next-gen update. However, no deal has been made just yet.

This new next-gen version The Witcher 3 Complete Edition for PC PS5 and Xbox Series consoles was announced in April 2020. It will feature a number of visual and technical improvements including ray-tracing and faster loading times. It will also include the base game, both expansions (Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine), and all extra content. If you already own the game on PC, Xbox One, or PlayStation 4, you will receive the upgrades at no additional cost in the form of a free update.

The Witcher 3 originally launched in May 2015 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. The Nintendo Switch version released in October 2019.
