Mini-Review:
Released along with “Toy Story” is “Toy Story 2” on Blu-ray. Again, the Blu-ray treatment allows you to see the incredible detail in the animation and show off your home theater system properly. In the bonus features you’ll find a sneak peek at “Toy Story 3” which highlights the new characters. You get a look at Michael Keaton as Ken, Ned Beatty as a stuffed bear, and more. It looks like a lot of fun. The “Buzz Lightyear Mission Logs” from Disney and NASA are continued, this time showing life in zero-g on the space station. There’s plenty of footage of the Buzz toy floating around. “Paths to Pixar” shows more Pixar artists talking about how they got into animation. This batch is a tad more eccentric than those on the “Toy Story” Blu-ray. Also continued are the funny “Studio Stories” which tells funny tales from the early days of Pixar. There’s a great story about how a large portion of “Toy Story 2” was almost permanently erased from their hard drives. Another story about attempts to stick a Pinocchio toy in a ceiling had both the kids and I laughing a lot. You’ll want to work at Pixar after hearing this. “Pixar’s Zoetrope” shows an amazing animation demonstration using statues that was inspired by a Studio Ghibli exhibit in Japan. Rounding things out is the heartfelt tribute “Celebrating Our Friend Joe Ranft.” You learn more about the man that was so key to a lot of Pixar’s best moments.
Overall, this is a great replacement for your “Toy Story 2” DVD and is money well spent on your Blu-ray collection. This is the only way to watch “Toy Story 2” if you can’t see it in theaters in 3-D.
