August 16 brings home The Angry Birds Movie, The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai, Gotham Season Two and lots more!
Welcome to ComingSoon.net’s look at all the top titles arriving this week on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD. Check out the gallery viewer below for a look at the major new releases, catalogue films and television collections hitting shelves and/or VOD beginning Tuesday, August 16, 2016.
The only recent major release coming home August 16 is Sony Pictures’ animated box office smash The Angry Birds Movie. It’s still a very busy week, however, when it comes to indie releases, catalogue titles and television sets.
Drafthouse Films delivers Raiders!, the recent documentary about a group of fans who spent years and years meticulously reconstructing Raiders of the Lost Ark as a shot for shot fan film.
Universal Pictures brings home a half dozen catalogue comedies August 16, debuting all six on Blu-ray for the first time. Look for Tom Hanks starring opposite Shelley Long in 1986’s The Money Pit and headlining Joe Dante’s 1989 dark comedy The Burbs. There’s also the John Hughes-scripted 1988 comedy The Great Outdoors (starring Dan Aykroyd and John Candy), the 1989 ensemble comedy The Dream Team, 1992’s franchise-launching canine comedy Beethoven and the 1998 comedy biopic Patch Adams, starring the late Robin Williams.
Shout! Factory this week launches their new Shout! Select line with the first ever Blu-ray release of The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai: Across the Eighth Dimension. If that’s not enough for collectors, the company also brings home John Carpenter’s early and little seen telefilm Elvis, starring Kurt Russell as the King. They’ve also got a new entry in their Scream Factory line with Brad Anderson’s impressive 2001 horror thriller, Session 9.
Not to be outdone, Arrow Films offers an HD treatment for the 1983 cult cannibal comedy Microwave Massacre while the Criterion Collection this week inducts the 2015 documentary Ingrid Bergman: In Her Own Words.
Warner Archive brings to Blu-ray Richard C. Sarafian’s 1971 western, Man in the Wilderness, starring Richard Harris, as well as a pair of MOD DVDs: a 1930 adaptation of Moby Dick, starring John Barrymore as Ahab, and the 1969 historical drama Alfred the Great.
Small screen releases arriving August 16 include (on DVD only) the second season of Showtime‘s The Affair and complete season/series sets for both Power Rangers Megaforce and Power Rangers Super Megaforce. There’s also a DVD-only complete series set of NBC‘s Community, arriving as an Amazon exclusive.
Arriving on DVD and Blu-ray is the second season of FOX‘s Gotham, the fifth season of ABC‘s Once Upon a Time, the seventh season of The CW‘s The Vampire Diaries and the first half of the fifth season of AMC‘s Hell on Wheels.
Debuting via Digital HD August 16 are a trio of recent big screen releases including the dramas A Bigger Splash and Me Before You and the Lonely Island mockumentary Popstar: Never Stop Stopping. Meanwhile, Imperium, starring Daniel Racliffe, debuts exclusively to iTunes this Friday, August 19.
You can check out cover art for all the August 16 releases in the gallery viewer below alongside a listing of each release’s special features (where applicable).
