Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment sold 3.2 million Blu-ray and DVD units of James Cameron’s Avatar on Earth Day, the film’s first day of home video release. That is 2 million DVDs and 1.2 million Blu-rays and easily beats the previous record of 2.7 million total units set by The Dark Knight (DVD 2.1 million, Blu-ray 600,000).
Retailers sold out of 60% of their Blu-ray inventory, while they moved out about 50% of their Avatar DVDs.
