In advance of this weekend’s 87th Annual Academy Awards, a number of key features are coming home, including Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Birdman (up for nine awards), James Marsh’s The Theory of Everything (nominated for five) and Studio Ghibli’s The Tale of Princess Kaguya (up for Best Animated Feature).
Other recent big screen releases include Peter and Bobby Farrelly’s two-decades-in-the-making comedy sequel Dumb and Dumber To, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s global controversy-building The Interview, the acclaimed Roger Ebert documentary Buy at Amazon, and Theodore Melfi’s comedy drama St. Vincent, starring Bill Murray, Naomi Watts and Melissa McCarthy.
On the horror side of things, Magnet is delivering the third entry in their anthology franchise with V/H/S/ Viral while Shout Factory’s Scream Factory imprint offers up both the recent creature feature Animal and a collector’s edition of director Dwight H. Little’s 1989 adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera, starring Freddy Krueger himself, Robert Englund, in the title role.
The Criterion Collection, meanwhile, upgrade Yasujiro Ozu’s An Autumn Afternoon to Blu-ray while, on the television front, we’re getting both the complete fourth season of Game of Thrones and the recent “Doctor Who” holiday special, Last Christmas.
