Sony Pictures Home Entertainment’s Open Season easily took the top spot on the national DVD sales chart for the week ending Feb. 4. The animated feature, which generated $84.3 million in theaters, outsold its nearest competitor, 20th Century Fox’s The Marine, by a margin of nearly 3-to-1.
The Marine, which grossed $18.8 million at the boxoffice, managed to storm to the top of Home Media Magazine’s video rental chart for the week, earning an estimated $6.3 million to second-ranked Open Season‘s $6 million.
Two other new releases debuted in the top 10 on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart for the week: MGM’s Flyboys at No. 3 and Sony Pictures’ Facing the Giants at No. 7. Fox’s Little Miss Sunshine, meanwhile, rose from No. 10 to No. 8 its seventh week in stores.
On the rental chart, Flyboys also debuted at No. 3, with estimated earnings of $5.7 million. The previous week’s top renter, Lionsgate’s Saw III, slipped to No. 4, with rental earnings of $5.6 million.
