The Killing Fields

Denzel Washington was Academy Award-nominated for his performance as Rubin "Hurricane" Carter in Norman Jewison's biopic of the former middleweight boxer who was wrongfully convicted of a triple homicide.

Gorillas in the Mist
Nominated for five Academy Awards, Michael Apted's 1988 biopic of naturalist Dian Fossey stars Sigourney Weaver. Although she didn't take home an Oscar, she tied for a Golden Globe that year with both Jodie Foster and Shirley MacLaine.
