The Long Live Montero Tour became the subject of a documentary titled, Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero. This project showcased the rapper/singer’s life on the road, where he opened up about his career and influence in showbiz as a colored homosexual artist. Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero premiered at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, however, it faced a delay due to a bomb threat. According to Variety, the reason behind this threat was because of Nas’s sexual orientation.
Per IMDb, the synopsis of Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero reads, “Long Live Montero follows trailblazing rapper, singer and songwriter, Lil Nas X, as he embarks on his first ever tour. This diaristic film is an intimate portrait of an artist navigating identity, family, expectations, and acceptance.”
Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero’s premiere was delayed by 30 minutes due to a bomb threat
According to Variety, Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero’s screening was supposed to begin on Sunday, September 10, 2023, at approximately 10 p.m. in Roy Thomson Hall, at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival. Initially, the documentary’s co-directors Carlos López Estrada and Zac Manuel, and editor Andrew Morrow, made a smooth red carpet entry. They even took pictures and interacted with fans present during the occasion. Unfortunately, a few minutes before Lil Nas X’s entrance, officials informed him of a bomb threat. In addition, officials told the artist to delay his entrance until the coast was clear.
For 20 minutes, TIFF security thoroughly searched Roy Thomson Hall and concluded that the bomb threat was not credible. Once the conditions were safe, Lil Nas X made his entrance and joined the documentary’s co-directors on the red carpet. Eventually, Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero started screening at approximately 10:30 pm. Variety even had a conversation with a TIFF spokesperson where he explained how efficiently security handled the situation, which led to a slight delay in Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero’s premiere. Furthermore, he stated that the threat was targeted toward the movie or Lil Nas X. The spokesperson said, “Our standard security measures remained in place during this time, and the screening commenced with a slight delay. To our knowledge, this was a general threat and not directed at the film or the artist.”
Throughout TIFF’s 46-year history, there have not been any major concerns with the festival’s safety and security. Eventually, Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero premiered in the United States in January 2024 on Max.
