Netflix’s true crime series Homicide: New York re-examines the gruesome murder case of Michael McMorrow that took place in 1997. The episode, titled “Central Park Slaying,” unravels the mystery behind one of the most brutal slayings. It also reveals how investigators caught two teenagers in the murder case. The true crime series is currently available to stream on Netflix.
In May 1997, police discovered the dead body of the real estate agent Michael McMorrow in the lake in Central Park, New York. According to The New York Times, officers found cuts and wounds on the victim’s body. Meanwhile, the series noted that McMorrow had 30 stab wounds across his body, including six stab wounds to the heart. Authorities learned about the suspects after a 911 call, per The New York Times. After investigators traced the call, they reached the house.
As per The New York Times, a teenager named Daphne Abdela called the emergency and informed that one of her friends “jumped into the lake and didn’t come out.” Police noted that Abdela was “faking hysteria” during the interrogation. After the investigation and finding strong evidence, police apprehended Abdela and Christopher Vasquez for the murder of Michael McMorrow. The New York Times reported that Abdela pleaded guilty to manslaughter. On the other hand, the jury found Vasquez guilty of first-degree manslaughter.
The true crime series noted that the court sent both culprits to prison for Michael McMorrow’s murder. However, they were reportedly released from prison in 2004.
Did Daphne Abdela return to prison after getting out on parole?
After serving six years of their sentence, the court released Daphne Abdela and Christopher Vasquez from the prison. However, as per the true crime series Homicide: New York, Abdela returned to serving her jail time after violating her parole. The series suggested that Abdela assaulted one of the residents of a halfway house. As a result, the culprit in Michael McMorrow’s murder case went back to prison and served a full term.
Meanwhile, Christopher Vasquez has maintained a low profile after getting out of prison. As of now, little is known about his whereabouts. However, the series claims that Vasquez hasn’t committed any crime since getting out of prison for the murder of Michael McMorrow.
