Netflix will release a documentary titled What Jennifer Did on April 10, 2024. It will delve into the harrowing crimes of a Canadian woman named Jennifer Pan.
On the night of November 8, 2010, Jennifer frantically dialed 911 and informed dispatch that three intruders had broken into her home and shot her parents, Huei Hann Pan and Bich Ha Pan. When help arrived, they discovered that her mother had died. Although her father survived the attack, he was heavily wounded and later on fell into a coma.
From the surface, the entire ordeal looked like a home invasion. However, upon investigation, officials realized a gruesome truth. According to Tudum by Netflix, the homicide of Jennifer’s parents was planned by Jennifer herself. As per reports, with the help of her drug dealer friend Daniel Wong, Jennifer hired three hitmen to end her parents’ lives. However, when her father came out of the coma, he informed officials of his daughter’s involvement in the incident.
Huei Hann had testified against his daughter in court. For her crimes, the court sentenced Jennifer to life imprisonment in 2014. She will be eligible for parole after 25 years in jail.
Directed by Jenny Popplewell, the synopsis of What Jennifer Did reads, “It was a violent crime that shook a quiet Canadian town: Mysterious intruders break into the home of Vietnamese immigrants, terrorize the family, and leave a traumatized daughter as the only witness. Neighbors and friends describe the family as hospitable, generous, and hard-working – how could they be targets?”
Why did Jennifer Pan want her parents killed?
Reports suggest that Jennifer Pan had lied to her parents about her academic record for years. She told them she had several achievements and was studying to become a pharmacist. In fact, she forged a diploma to deceive them. Eventually, Huei Hann and Bich Ha came to know the truth.
At the time, Jennifer was dating Daniel Wong. However, her parents disapproved of this relationship and forbade her from interacting with him. Frustrated, Jennifer decided to get her parents killed. According to CBC News, in court, her father revealed that his daughter had spoken with one of the intruders in the hallway. He stated, “He talked to my daughter. I could not hear what was being said but they were speaking softly.”
Furthermore, Huei Hann explained how he gave his daughter two options: to stay at home and go to school or leave the house and stay with Wong. He said, “I was very upset because all our effort was to help her attend school and she was not. I told her to cease the relationship with Danny Wong or wait until I’m dead. You have two options: first, stay at home and go to school. Second choice, you go with Danny Wong and never come back.”
The three hitmen — David Mylvaganam, Lenford Crawford, and Eric Carty —, along with Daniel Wong, were sentenced to life imprisonment. However, Carty died in prison in 2018.
