Recently, Netflix launched the teaser trailer for their upcoming true crime documentary, What Jennifer Did. Releasing on April 10, 2024, this project will shed light on the horrific crimes of a Canadian woman called Jennifer Pan.
Jennifer Pan lived with her parents, Huei Hann Pan and Bich Ha Pan. For several years, Huei and Bich believed that their daughter was a meritorious student who received many honors. However, these were elaborate lies that Jennifer told them to avoid disappointment. Her false stories included lying about studying pharmacy and even forging a diploma.
Eventually, Jennifer’s parents came to learn the truth. At the time, she was friends with a drug dealer named Daniel Wong. Reports suggest that Jennifer and Daniel had dated in the past. However, upon getting exposed, Huei and Bich did not allow their daughter to spend time with Daniel.
Frustrated, Jennifer decided to get her parents killed. She asked Daniel to murder her parents, but in such a way that the entire ordeal would look like a robbery gone. On the night of November 8, 2010, three hitmen named David Mylvaganam, Lenford Crawford, and Eric Carty entered the Pan residence and shot Jennifer’s parents. Her mother died instantly, while her father was severely injured.
For her actions, the court sentenced Jennifer Pan to life imprisonment, with the possibility of parole after 25 years.
As per the teaser trailer of What Jennifer Did, its synopsis reads, “It was a violent crime that shook a quiet Canadian town: Mysterious intruders break into the home of Vietnamese immigrants, terrorize the family, and leave a traumatized daughter as the only witness. Neighbors and friends describe the family as hospitable, generous, and hard-working – how could they be targets?”
Where is Jennifer Pan now?
Currently 37, Jennifer Pan is incarcerated at the Grand Valley Institution for Women in Kitchener, Ontario. Moreover, the court sentenced Daniel Wong, David Mylvaganam, and Lenford Crawford to receive life sentences. Like Jennifer, this trio will also be eligible for parole after 25 years.
The third hitman, Eric Carty, had initially faced a mistrial. However, in December 2015, the court sentenced him to 18 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to conspiring to commit murder. Although he would have been eligible for parole in the future, he died in prison in 2018.
According to CBC, Jennifer’s father testified against her at her trial. Huei Hann Pan recalled that on that fateful night, the intruders woke him up by pointing a gun at his forehead. Moreover, Huei revealed that he saw his daughter speaking to one of the intruders in the hallway. He said, “He talked to my daughter. I could not hear what was being said, but they were speaking softly.”
The court ordered Jennifer to have no further contact with her family. To this day, she continues to maintain her innocence. Her mother’s funeral was held on November 15, 2010, but her father could not attend it due to his injuries. She was buried on November 19, 2010.
