A Hindi-language Canadian documentary film titled To Kill a Tiger was nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the 96th Academy Awards. Furthermore, Netflix released this project on its platform on March 10, 2024.
In To Kill a Tiger, the audience witnessed the heartbreaking story of an Indian sexually assaulted survivor. Interestingly, this project is extremely close to Priyanka Chopra Jonas’s heart. In a recent interview with People Magazine, the actress stated that the documentary has everything to begin a much-needed conversation about sexual violence against women. Furthermore, the actress was born in Jharkhand, the same state where the documentary was filmed, making it personal.
She stated, “I seek and attach myself to work that really pushes the conversations of issues that I feel close to or passionate about. And sexual violence against women definitely is one of them.” She further stated, “In India, we say one-third of women in India have experienced sexual violence. And that statistic has to be higher because of underreporting.”
Directed by Nisha Pahuja, To Kill a Tiger showcased the struggle of an Indian farmer whose 13-year-old daughter was brutally gang-raped.
According to IMDb, the synopsis of the documentary reads, “Ranjit, a farmer in India, takes on the fight of his life when he demands justice for his 13-year-old daughter, the victim of a brutal gang rape. His decision to support his daughter is virtually unheard of, and his journey unprecedented.”

Priyanka Chopra Jonas signed on as an executive producer for To Kill a Tiger before its Netflix release. In addition, Mindy Kaling and Dev Patel are also executive producers of this terrifying documentary.
In a conversation with People Magazine, Priyanka Chopra Jonas stated that To Kill a Tiger is a call to action for men. She said, “The film speaks to not just survivors. But their allies as well, men supporting women. It’s very interesting to have a window into that. And to see how a father fights his entire community, the justice system, against what he’s told is the norm for his daughter’s rights.”
Priyanka Chopra Jonas saw To Kill a Tiger after its premiere at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival. It moved her to tears and made her remember her father, who died in 2013. In addition, she also compared Ranjit’s resistance to her father’s. She stated, “I lost my father in 2013 and he was my biggest champion. Ranjit and his quiet resolution — my dad was that kind of champion for me…. There is something about just having a dad that’s your champion. That’s such a universal feeling.”
According to NDTV, Priyanka’s father, Ashok Chopra, breathed his last at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, Mumbai. At the time of his passing, he was 64 years old.
