The U.K.’s Channel 5 will air a documentary titled Minute by Minute: The Titan Sub Disaster on March 6 and 7, 2024. This project will shed light on the infamous Titan submersible implosion that took the lives of its passengers.
Interestingly, the upcoming documentary will feature an uncanny clip that rescuers reportedly heard back in June 2023. According to People Magazine, during the search mission, rescuers heard noises resembling knocking. Former Navy submarine Captain Ryan Ramsey said, “The symmetry between those knockings is very unusual. It’s rhythmic, it’s like somebody is making that sound, and the fact that it is repeated is really unusual.”
Preparations for the Titan submersible to go underwater began on June 16 and 17, 2023. A day later, the expedition began. However, the vessel lost signals with the Canadian expedition Polar Prince just 1 hour and 45 minutes into the dive. The Polar Prince initially searched. To no avail, they requested help from the Coast Guard. The situation was tense as the submersible had oxygen for only 96 hours.
On June 20, the Coast Guard captain told reporters, “This is a very complex search, and the unified team is working around the clock to bring all available assets and expertise to bear as quickly as possible in an effort to solve this very complex problem.” Unfortunately, two days later, the U.S. Coast Guard stated that the vessel imploded underwater and everyone on board died.
The synopsis of Minute by Minute: The Titan Sub Disaster reads, “A year on from the tragedy, Minute by Minute: The Titan Sub Disaster produced by ITN Productions for Channel 5 in the UK creates a detailed picture of events leading up to Titan’s ill-fated expedition to the Titanic wreck and asks what lessons can be learned.”
How Many People Were Onboard the Titan Sub?
The Titan submersible disaster killed all five of its passengers on board. According to TODAY, they were:
- Stockton Rush, the CEO of OceanGate Expeditions
- British billionaire Hamish Harding, the owner of Action Aviation
- French dive expert Paul-Henri Nargeolet
- Shahzada Dawood, Pakistani businessman
- Suleman Dawood, Shahzada’s 19-year-old son
After this tragic incident, OceanGate released a statement that said, “We now believe that our CEO Stockton Rush, Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman Dawood, Hamish Harding, and Paul-Henri Nargeolet, have sadly been lost.”
It further read, “These men were true explorers who shared a distinct spirit of adventure, and a deep passion for exploring and protecting the world’s oceans. Our hearts are with these five souls and every member of their families during this tragic time. We grieve the loss of life and joy they brought to everyone they knew”. They even added that it was “an extremely sad time for our dedicated employees who are exhausted and grieving deeply over this loss.”
Even Suleman and Shahzada Dawood’s family also shared a statement that reflected their grief. The Dawood Foundation statement read, “Our beloved sons were aboard OceanGate’s Titan submersible that perished underwater. Please continue to keep the departed souls and our family in your prayers during this difficult period of mourning.”
Unfortunately, none of their remains could be recovered. Furthermore, a disaster medicine expert at Florida International University stated that it would be impossible to find any recoverable remains of the victims. Nonetheless, the documentary that will come out in two days will feature a deep dive into this unforgettable implosion.
