The Indrani Mukerjea Story: Buried Truth is a documentary series that is set to premiere on Netflix on Friday, February 23, 2024. It will follow the murder case of Sheena Bora, Indrani Mukerjea’s daughter. The series will feature Indrani Mukerjea, her children—Vidhie Mukerjea and Mikhail Bora—and others.
In 2015, Indrani Mukerjea was arrested after she was accused of kidnapping and murdering her daughter Sheena Bora. Earlier, on April 24, 2012, Sheena Bora’s employers received a resignation letter from her. The Hindu reported that she was 24 and an assistant manager employed with Mumbai Metro One. Her boyfriend, Rahul Mukerjea, also received a message from her in which she said she wanted to break up with him. During this time, Indrani was married to Peter Mukerjea. Rahul, who was seeing Sheena Bora, was Peter’s son and Sheena’s step-brother.
No disappearance or missing complaint was registered because her family claimed that she moved abroad to pursue higher education. However, on May 23, 2012, the police found an abandoned body in Maharasthra’s Raigad district. Upon investigation, the CBI identified it as Sheena’s body. This triggered a deeper investigation into the victim’s family.
On August 21, 2015, Indrani Mukerjea’s former driver, Shyamvar Rai, was charged with the possession of illegal weapons. He was subsequently arrested. Shyamvar then revealed to authorities that Indrani and her ex-husband, Sanjeev Khanna, were involved with Sheena Bora’s murder that happened over three years ago.
Almost immediately, Indrani was arrested by the Mumbai police, which was followed by Sanjeev Khanna’s arrest in Kolkata. Following this, Siddhartha Das, a man from Kolkata and ex-partner of Indrani, went public with his claim that Sheena Bora was his biological daughter, according to NDTV.
The Indrani Mukerjea Story: Who reported Sheena Bora’s disappearance?
Sheena Bora’s disappearance was never officially reported, and no complaint was filed. She was last seen on April 24, 2012, before her parents claimed she left the country. The CBI’s investigation established that Indrani and Peter Mukerjea visited the police to pull out her daughter’s call records a few months after her disappearance, NDTV reported. They allegedly tried to make authorities believe that they were also unaware of Sheena’s whereabouts.
The case was handed over to the CBI in September 2015, and in November, Peter Mukerjea was also arrested. The CBI suggested that Peter and Indrani were collectively against Sheena Bora’s relationship with Rahul, according to the Hindustan Times. By 2017, the CBI charged Indrani Mukerjea, Peter Mukerjea, and Sanjeev Khanna with conspiracy, kidnapping, destroying evidence, giving false information, and the murder of Sheena Bora.
Authorities also revealed that Sheena Bora’s ex-boyfriend and Peter Mukerjea’s son, Rahul, had tried to file a missing complaint following her disappearance. However, he was stopped by his father, who convinced him that Sheena was in contact with Peter. The 59-year-old, according to the CBI’s charges, was aware of Sheena Bora’s murder before her body was discovered.
The trial that followed the CBI’s charges began in 2017. Five years later, in 2022, the Supreme Court granted Indrani Mukerjea bail after six years of remaining in arrest.
Netflix‘s upcoming documentary, The Indrani Mukerjea Story: Buried Truth, will feature case-related call recordings between Peter, Indrani, and Rahul alongside family photographs. Watch the docu-series on February 23, 2024.
