John Mulaney is getting candid about a cocaine episode where he nearly needed medical help. The 42-year-old was recently named GQ’s Comedian of the Year for their 2024 Men of the Year issue. During his interview with the publication, Mulaney opened up about his past drug addiction and recovery journey, among other things.
John Mulaney’s nearly called paramedics after cocaine incident
During the interview with GQ for their 2024 Man of the Year issue, John Mulaney recalled a cocaine episode in his New York apartment. He had taken so many drugs that he was afraid he would not make it to the next day. Mulaney recalled he left the door to his apartment open. The comedian said he couldn’t “explain the logic,” but he had thought of “going to hit the door buzzer and tell the doorman to run and get the paramedics.”
The “Saturday Night Live” star shared he was worried about not being able to dial the emergency number and explain himself. He added that he didn’t want them to break his apartment’s door down. Mulaney further recalled what happened next, “I just sat on the rug and slowly came down.” He then remembered assuring himself, “This is insane. I’m going to totally slow down.” He admitted that even though the incident happened on a certain Tuesday, he “did it again” on Thursday.
GQ noted Mulaney relapsed following his split with his ex-wife, Anna Marie Tendler. The comedian went back to rehab in 2020 for addiction to cocaine and a range of pharmaceuticals. Following the intervention, Mulaney kept up with his sobriety. The following year, he connected with his now-wife, Olivia Munn, and welcomed their first child soon after. During the interview, Mulaney also shared how his wife began helping him throughout his addiction recovery journey.
Mulaney and Munn tied the knot earlier this year after Munn’s battle with breast cancer. In September, the couple expanded their family by welcoming their second child, a baby girl named Méi June Mulaney, via surrogacy.
