The ongoing modern C-drama Best Choice Ever released its first set of episodes on April 9, 2024. It features popular actors Yang Zi and Xu Kai in the lead roles. It is an adaptation of the novel “Stories of Mai Chenghuan” by Yi Shu.
The drama tells the story of Mai Cheng Huan (Yang Zi), who can not decide between allowing her mother to intervene in her personal affairs and taking control of her own life. After her boyfriend dumps her, she meets her step-grandmother’s grandson and forms an unlikely bond with him.
Episode 1 of the drama primarily focuses on Cheng Huan’s mother’s influence and dominant nature. The episode begins with her mother worrying about her not returning home from the office. Even though Cheng Huan is 29 years old, her mother thinks of her as a little girl. Cheng Huan’s father tries to calm her down, but she yells at him, saying that her worries are justified.
Meanwhile, Cheng Huan’s boyfriend, Xin Jia Liang (Niu Jun Feng), drops her off in front of her home. He is upset that Cheng Huan always rushes home and never spends time with him. Even when with him, she has to get home soon. The couple leans in for a kiss, but Cheng Huan’s mother catches them in the act.

She goes off at Jia Liang and calls him irresponsible for dropping her daughter off at such a late hour. In the end, Cheng Huan’s father comes to their rescue and helps Jia Liang escape.
Cheng Huan’s mother interferes at every stage of her life. She nags at her for not wearing socks. She asks her if she has yet slept with Jia Liang. Cheng Huan’s mother compares her with a friend who got married right after college and already has a child. She advises Cheng Huan to break up with Jia Liang if he is not ardent enough. Cheng Huan tells her that she just wants to enjoy her time and take things slow for the time being.
In the first episode of Best Choice Ever, Cheng Huan bakes a cake for Jia Liang and brings it to the hotel where she works. While boarding the elevator, she meets Yao Zhi Ming (Xu Kai), who is in the same building as a guest. But their first encounter ends up being an unpleasant one as Cheng Huan spills coffee on his shirt. It annoys Zhi Ming, but he lets it go. Cheng Huan helps him out with a stain remover. When he offers her a tip, Cheng Huan politely declines it.
Yao Zhi Ming turns out to be the new operations director of the hotel. Cheng Huan gets in trouble with him for placing the cake in the conference room. He harshly criticizes her in front of everyone.
Cheng Huan and Zhi Ming keep running into each other. She buys him some fishing equipment to make up for her mistake. She even helps him take the metro when his car breaks down.
Jia Liang’s father participates in the annual bidding event that takes place at the same hotel where Cheng Huan works. Cheng Huan is surprised to see her boyfriend there. What secret is he hiding from her?
