Classic Studio Ghibli Movie Getting 4K Rerelease in Theaters, Date Set

GKIDS has announced that a newly restored 4K version of Hayao Miyazaki‘s acclaimed Studio Ghibli movie Princess Mononoke is officially heading to IMAX theaters this month. Since making its debut in 1997, the animated fantasy has received a Certified Fresh rating of 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 118 reviews.

When does the 4K rerelease of Princess Mononoke come out?

In celebration of its 40th anniversary, GKIDS will be releasing the newly-restored 4K version of Princess Mononoke on March 26, exclusively on IMAX theaters. The film will be shown in both original Japanese language with subtitles and English language dubbed versions. Tickets are now available to purchase on Fandango.

Set during the Muromachi period of the Japanese history, the 1997 movie was written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. The English voice cast included Gillian Anderson as Moro, Billy Crudup as Ashitaka, Claire Danes as San, Minnie Driver as Lady Eboshi, Jada Pinkett Smith as Toki, Billy Bob Thornton as Jigo, Keith David as Okkoto, and more. It was produced by Studio Ghibli chairman Toshio Suzuki.

“From the legendary Studio Ghibli and Academy Award-winning director Hayao Miyazaki, comes an epic masterpiece that has dazzled audiences worldwide with its breathtaking imagination, exhilarating battles, and deep humanity,” reads the official synopsis. “Inflicted with a deadly curse, the young warrior Ashitaka heads west in search of a cure. There, he stumbles into a bitter conflict between Lady Eboshi, the proud people of Iron Town, and the enigmatic Princess Mononoke, a young girl raised by wolves, who will stop at nothing to prevent the humans from destroying her home and the forest spirits and animal gods who live there.”
