Kaiju No. 8 episode 3 recap: Kafka gets cornered by a Kaiju
Kaiju No. 8, titled “Revenge Match”, begins with Ichikawa excusing Kafka’s Kaiju-like smell with the fact that they are a part of the Kaiju clean-up crew. Finding the excuse satisfactory, Shinomiya gets off their back. Moreover, Kafka enthusiastically prepares to enter the grounds of the Defense Force Exam with Ichikawa.
The episode then reveals that the exam has two stages. The first stage tests participants’ fitness, and the other stage tests their aptitude. Kafka lags during the fitness test, ranking far below most participants, leading Shinomiya to bully him for his score.
Later, various Defense Force Exam participants and the exam proctor – the Third Division Vice-Captain, Hoshina – are revealed. Hoshina explains that the next stage requires participants to wear Kaiju combat suits that measure their combat power. While Ichikawa scores 8%, Kafka remains at 0% despite trying his best to level up. To everyone’s surprise, Shinomiya, on the other hand, levels at an astonishing 46%.
When the main test of neutralizing Kaiju begins, Hoshina announces that Mina Ashiro is spectating the participants, which makes Kafka nervous. However, Kafka and Ichikawa, who are on the brink of losing, team up to assist other participants in killing Kaiju. Eventually, a Kaiju corners Kafka, almost killing him, but Shinomiya saves him before he gives up. Towards the end, Kafka gets excited and levels his combat power up to 0.01%.
