Kento Nanami is a crucial character who appears in the initial parts of Jujutsu Kaisen. Audiences eventually grew fond of his steadfast personality. In fact, when he was introduced in the storyline, several fans admired him and the role he played as Itadori’s mentor. Nanami’s expertise as a Grade 1 Sorcerer is evident in his abilities, reflecting his high rank.
In the overarching premise of Jujutsu Kaisen, curse energy, and curse techniques play a pivotal role, and Nanami is no exception among the curse users. The Grade 1 Sorcerer was a former underclassman to Satoru Gojo at Tokyo Jujutsu High. His curse technique is known as the Ratio Technique. It allows the user to perform a significant amount of damage to the enemies by striking at their critical points.
What is Nanami Kento’s Ratio Technique?
The Ratio Technique allows Nanami to divide his target into ten equal parts (tenths). If he attacks the target on the spot that superimposes with the ratio 7:3, he can deliver a devastating hit. This is the basis of his signature curse technique.
The Ratio technique lets Nanami identify the vulnerable spots in his targets. The ratio of 7:3 is essential as it helps him to create that opening. The greatest advantage of using this technique is that if Nanami can land a clean hit, he can deal significant damage to much stronger opponents, even to non-living things.
For this technique to work correctly, neither the length nor the wingspan of the target are necessary. Nanami can cut several parts, such as the torso, head, and limbs, and he has complete freedom of choice, as shown in the show during the fight between Mahito and Nanami. The latter sliced through Mahito’s arm with a swift strike.
In a nutshell, this is quite an overpowered technique. The only reason Nanami was not able to defeat Mahito was the latter’s main ability — idle Transformation. This allows Mahito to manipulate the soul, which implies that physical damage means nothing to him.
How powerful is the Ratio Technique?
Nanami possesses near-superhuman strength. Combined with his speed, durability, tactical intelligence, and problem-solving skills, the Ratio Technique becomes a deadly force against powerful adversaries. His swordsmanship is fierce, too, and he can enhance his attacks with his high cursed energy to land a devastating hit on his target. This was evident during his battle against Dagon and Haruta in the Shibuya Incident arc.
The point where the 7:3 ratio coincides in a physical body is the weakest part of the enemies. This allows Nanami to obliterate high-level curses solely with his blunt sword. He is so fluent in his technique that even Special Grade curses struggle against him.
For instance, although Mahito’s arm was protected with curse energy, Nanami could still cut through it quickly. Demonstrating resilience against Mahito’s Idle Transfiguration, Nanami proves himself to be a formidable opponent. If it had not been for Mahito’s Domain Expansion, the battle would have been one-sided, with Nanami defeating him.
