The Apothecary Diaries episode 23 recap: Lakan and Fengxian’s history takes center stage
The Apothecary Diaries episode 23 was titled “Balsam and Woodsorrel.” It revolved around Lakan’s history with his past lover and Verdigris House courtesan, Fengxian. The episode begins with Maomao confronting Lakan and challenging him to a chess match. She proposes that whoever wins three matches can demand rewards from the loser.
To Jinshi’s concern, Lakan demands Maomao to live with him upon losing, and Maomao demands that Lakan would have to buy out a courtesan if he loses. Maomao also says that if either of them backed out from the game for any reason, they would lose. Somehow, Maomao tricks Lakan into getting drunk, leading to his loss.
Later, a flashback explains Lakan’s past struggle with face blindness. The only person who supported him was his uncle, who got him into board games like chess and go. A hopeless Lakan started visiting the Verdigris House and lost a chess game against Fengxian, a courtesan.
Hers was the only human face he could recognize, and the two eventually fell in love. However, due to unavoidable circumstances, their love story ended tragically after Fengxian conceived Maomao, and Lakan left the country due to his father’s orders.
In the present time, Lakan finally wakes up at the Verdigris House, and Meimei offers him the medicine that Maomao had prepared. Towards the end of the episode, Maomao is seen sitting in a carriage with a blue rose in her hand.
