On Thursday, March 14, 2024, the official website and Twitter of Cocoa Fujiwara’s The Magical Girl and The Evil Lieutenant Used to Be Archenemies anime released a teaser trailer. The anime is based on the late author’s fantasy romance manga of the same name.
Cocoa released her manga in Square Enix’s magazine in 2013 but couldn’t complete it before she died in 2015. Square Enix sought consent from Cocoa’s family and then went on to release the manga’s final volume in 2016.

The Magical Girl and The Evil Lieutenant Used to Be Archenemies anime: Everything you need to know
The anime will release in July 2024 and see Yūki Ono playing the role of an evil lieutenant, Mira. He is known famously for his work as Josuke Higashikata in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. Joining him will be Mai Nakahara, who plays the role of the magical girl Byakuya Mimori. The two voice actors are returning to reprise their roles from the manga’s 2015 drama CD.
Akiyo Ohashi will direct the anime at Studio Bones, while Yuniko Ayana will handle the scripts and series composition. Haruko Iizuka designs the characters, with MAYUKO composing the music.
As for the plot, Yen Press describes the series as follows: “She’s a magical girl, sworn to fight for peace, love, and justice. He’s a lieutenant, born into a military family that serves an evil empire. And yet, it was love at first sight… From Inu x Boku SS creator Cocoa Fujiwara comes a four-panel comic about hostile enemies who won’t kill (and love) each other!”
