In Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, Frieren, an elf, embarks on a journey with two primary companions. These include a fellow mage, Fern, and a front-line warrior, Stark. On their journey, all three of them grow close together. But, fans wonder: Do Stark and Fern end up together in the narrative?
As far as the anime is concerned, Fern and Stark are not together as an official couple up until episode 23. However, some developments in the manga indicate that Fern and Stark might be a romantic couple. But, again, such a declaration has not been explicitly made in the manga as well.
Stark and Fern’s relationship explored
Fern and Stark met for the first time in a peculiar setting. When Stark admitted to Frieren and Fern that he was scared of fighting the Solar Dragon in his town, Fern considered him a useless coward. But, later, Fern witnesses him working hard and realizes that he does have the potential to defeat the Dragon – which he eventually does.
After this feat, Stark joins Frieren’s party as their front-liner, but, sadly, Fern and Stark bicker over small things. With Fern’s tendency to get upset quite easily, Stark finds it difficult to keep up with her frustration. Moreover, Fern misconstrues Stark as a pervert and a coward.
However, Sein, a member who had temporarily ventured as a member of Frieren’s party, guides Fern and Stark to communicate better. Eventually, they do communicate better though Fern still gives Stark the silent treatment when he does something upsetting.
But, the two express concern and seem to care about each other. As Stark puts effort into making Fern happy, she puts thought into understanding his wild nature. Moreover, in chapters 66 and 67 of the manga, Fern asks Stark to take her on a date. This indicates her romantic interest in Stark.
Eventually, the two go on a date in the Fortified City of Heiß, and though Stark is yet to realize his feelings towards Fern, their developing romance is quite apparent.
