TO Books’ announcement on Wednesday, December 7, 2023, has sparked excitement among fans of Ascendance of a Bookworm. Also known as Honzuki no Gekokujō: Shisho ni Naru Tame niwa Shudan o Erandeiramasen, Ascendance of a Bookworm will get a new anime adaptation from Wit Studio. The upcoming season will focus on Part 3: Adopted Daughter of an Archduke from Miya Kazuki’s fantasy series.
The mangaka commenced the literary journey on the Shōsetsuka ni Narō website in 2013, eventually concluding the web novel in 2017. Illustrated by You Shiina, the print edition continues to mesmerize readers. The 33rd and final volume (volume 12 of part 5) are scheduled for release on December 9, 2023.
Kazuki’s series also got an anime adaptation in 2019 by Ajia-do Animation Works, who animated the first three seasons. Now, with a change in studio, it remains to be seen how well the series can perform.
Ascendance of a Bookworm: Everything you need to know
The story arc of Ascendance of a Bookworm extends beyond the main series. The spinoff story, Hannelore no Kizokuin Gonensei, began publishing on the same website in 2017. It still continues to unveil additional layers to this interesting universe.
For readers who want to read it in English, J-Novel Club not only offers the light novels but also various manga adaptations. The publisher’s portrayal of the story introduces a protagonist, formerly a college girl, reborn in a world bereft of books. As it is, she strives to create them and immerse herself in a world brimming with literary treasures.
Manga adaptations provide artistic renditions of this interesting story arc. Suzuka added to the art for adaptations of Parts 1 and 2, while Ryō Namino and Hikaru Katsuki took charge of Parts 3 and 4, respectively. J-Novel Club also adds to the experience by releasing the manga adaptations of Parts 1 to 3, allowing readers to delve deeper into this saga.
In addition, the anime adaptation of the light novel series by Ajia-do enthralled fans for three seasons. The first season premiered in October 2019, followed by the second in April 2020. Crunchyroll streamed the series for international viewers and also provided an English dub. Moreover, two original video anime (OVA) episodes debuted in March 2020. Following this, the third season of the anime debuted in April 2022. Crunchyroll continued to stream the third season alongside an English dub from May of the same year.
Now, with Wit Studio taking over the reins, the upcoming season of Ascendance of a Bookworm promises a riveting journey. Given the reputation of the studio, who have been known to create famous shows like Attack on Titan or Spy x Family, it remains to be seen if the studio can manage to retain the authenticity of Kazuki’s light novel series.
